This demonstration shows the spectacular and highly exothermic reaction between aluminium and iron(III) oxide that produces molten iron. It is a displacement reaction, which shows that aluminium is a more reactive metal than iron.
There are many variations of this reaction. This one is a small scale one that takes place in a test tube and can be done safely on the open bench in a laboratory.
