An interesting demonstration where you ‘write’ with one electrode of a simple circuit on paper containing salt solution and an indicator.
Water molecules in the solution are reduced at the plug cathode leaving an excess of hydroxyl ions. The solution at the plug is therefore alkaline, producing a resulting colour change in the indicator.
