We are looking to recruit ten secondary schools to engage in a four term, fully-funded Enthuse Partnership with Caterpillar and SSERC around the theme of practical activities for Environmental Science. The content will be aligned to SQA National 5 and/or Higher Environmental Science course specification.
The partnership will include:
- An online launch event
- A two-day residential course at SSERC HQ
- Online sessions on STEM Engagement opportunities (Young STEM Leader Programme; STEM Ambassadors in Scotland; Nuffield Research Placements)
- Support to make connections in your local area
- Ongoing support throughout the Partnership
- Equipment to use with learners in school, as well as support on how to use this.

Requirements
To be considered for the Caterpillar Enthuse Partnership, your centre must meet the following conditions:
- Be a Secondary School in one of the following Local Authorities:

2. Commit to at least one (up to two) teacher(s) per centre attending the two-day residential course at SSERC HQ in Dunfermline.
3. Commit to attending online information sessions and taking forward at least one of the three STEM Engagement opportunities in your centre during the partnership.
4. Environmental Science is, or will be, timetabled to run in your centre as of August 2024.
5. Attend an end of Partnership celebration and evaluation event.

Cost
This is a fully funded course; funding provided by Caterpillar.
This is a residential course and overnight accommodation will be provided at a local hotel.
The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.
Outcomes/GTCS:
On completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- demonstrate an enhanced portfolio of ideas for practical work aligned to CfE National 5 and Higher Environmental Science
- use a wider variety of teaching strategies to promote learning in Environmental Science including demonstrations and scientific enquiry
- exemplify the importance of contemporary science and its applications in the context of the curriculum
- network with fellow professionals and explore mechanisms for ongoing support
- understand the range of opportunities within the wider STEM engagement portfolio which SSERC offers
- evaluate their own professional learning and its impact on learners
