SSERC are pleased to offer a new 1-day course to explore the use and application of the statistical programme, R. The session will consider three different types of investigations, that could be carried out at Advanced Higher Biology level and how the statistics package can be used to describe and analyse collected data and present the data appropriately. The use of R to construct different types of charts, including boxplots, will be explored and how R can be used to provide a measure of statistical significance or strength of correlation between variables. The course is particularly suited to practitioners who are delivering the AH Biology course in school but is targeted at teachers who are completely or relatively new to R.
The aim of the course is to show how simple using R can be but how much additional information pupils can gain from the data.
Course Dates: 4th May 2023
Closing Date: 24th March 2023
Course Aims
This course aims to support the use and application of the statistical programme, R, for the description, presentation and analysis of data derived from experiments at Advanced Higher Biology level.
Course Outcomes
By the end of this course, you should be able to:
· Navigate the interface of R.
· Input a dataset into R.
· Use code to produce descriptive statistics of a data set.
· Construct a labelled boxplot of a dataset to determine variation within and between data sets.
· Calculate standard deviation and standard error.
· Construct suitable charts for presentation of data.
· Identify appropriate statistics to analyse data and write code to predict the statistical significance of results obtained.
This is a 1-day non-residential course, so no accommodation is available.
The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU. SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway. Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.
