This courses is intended to give technicians experience in some of the chemistry techniques used in schools that are not covered in our other courses, most of which are only encountered at Higher or Advanced Higher.
It covers a significant amount of organic preparation with skills such as distillation, reflux, vacuum filtration use of a separating funnel, drying solutions.
We will also look at chromatography, standard solutions, melting points and more.
And we will also haave a session covering some of the trickier classroom demonstrations that technicians may be involved with: either preparing or carrying out.

Audience
School Technical Support Staff. Access to this unit will be at the discretion of the centre. It is recommended that you have attended our Chemical handling Course before attending but this is not essential for anyone with a sound chemistry background. If you are unsure, contact us at SSERC.

Programme
The programme will be released nearer the time.
The course will be held at SSERC in Dunfermline. Our SSERC buildings are at 2 Pitreavie Court, Dunfermline, KY11 8UU.
Rail
SSERC is a short (5-10 minutes) walk from Rosyth railway station and a longer (40 min) walk from Inverkeithing.
Bus
There is a bus stop about 100m from SSERC with a regular service into Dunfermline and it is also on one of the routes between edinburgh and Dunfermline.
Car
SSERC is close to the end of the A823(M) spur off Junction 2 of the M90 motorway and has ample free parking.
Car journey times (approximately): Edinburgh – 30 min; Glasgow – 60 min; Aberdeen – 2.5 hours; Inverness – 3 hours.
